Abstract: The plaquette internal energy Ep of U(1) lattice gauge theory (LGT) in three dimensions is calculated using the variational cumulant expansion (VCE) with the independent plaquette effective action. The Ep-β curve is continuous, which shows that the U(l) theory is confined. Our result is consistent with Monte Carlo (MC) data.
